Paul Josten (born April 3, 1928 ) is a former German football player who played for many years with the Duisburg game club in the Oberliga West .

Career

In the late 1940s, Josten played at Duisburger SC 1900 , which was then in the district class and had several other later top division players in its ranks, including Josef Broden , Hans Lohmann (Duisburger Spielverein) and Gerd Schönknecht ( Meidericher SV ). In the summer of 1950 he moved to the city rivals Duisburger Spielverein in the Oberliga West, which was the top division before the Bundesliga was introduced in 1963. The first division had numerous entries and exits in the run-up to the 1950/51 season. Accordingly, the newcomers competed for the regular places and the then 22-year-old Josten was initially not taken into account before he made his debut in the league on October 8, 1950 in a 1: 2 defeat against Alemannia Aachen . Then the defensive player was used more and more often and proved to be talented, but could not avert the clear relegation of his team at the end of the season with his eleven league appearances.

After the descent, the DSV belonged to the II. Division , which represented the double-track substructure for the Oberliga West and also extended to the area of North Rhine-Westphalia . Josten and his teammates did not compete in the same season with local rivals Duisburger FV 08 and had TSG Vohwinkel 80 from Wuppertal as their main competitor for the promotion. Ultimately, a possible return to the league in 1952 failed due to the slightly poorer goal quotient compared to Vohwinkel, which also failed in the relegation round. In his second round at DSV, Josten was already a member of the regular eleven with 28 appearances. For the season 1952/53 the II. Division was merged into a relay 2. League West. Josten had in the meantime fought for a permanent place - he played all 30 league games in which Willi Koll scored 24 goals - and played with the Duisburg team for promotion, but this was again narrowly missed with one point behind Rheydter SV . While Hamborn 07 also played second class at the time, Meidericher SV increasingly took on the role of the leading club in Duisburg. In 1954, however, the DSV succeeded as second division champions before SC Westfalia Herne in the desired promotion to the top division. Josten had played in 29 league games for DSV. This was accompanied by the permanent move from Rheintörchenstrasse to the Wedaustadion , which was the largest stadium in Duisburg.

In the league season 1954/55 Josten kept his regular place, was able to beat Meidericher SV, FC Schalke 04 and Rot-Weiss Essen with his teammates over the course of the season and ultimately achieve the class remaining. In the following year, the team continued to improve thanks to the newly signed junior striker Rolf Benning and finished fourth in the table. The 1956/57 season began with a series of seven wins, which was only ended by a 2-2 win against local rivals Meidericher SV and a subsequent defeat against 1. FC Köln . DSV was at the top of the table until the second half of the season and came in second behind Borussia Dortmund . Josten had not missed a game during the entire season and made a decisive contribution to achieving second place by preparing a goal from Willi Koll in the last season encounter against Schalke 04 shortly before the end of the game . As a result, the Duisburg team was able to qualify for the German championship finals in 1957 with an extremely tight margin. There, the game club met Hamburger SV , 1. FC Nürnberg and 1. FC Saarbrücken in the preliminary group and, in addition to a win against Saarbrücken, remained unbeaten in the other games, but made it into the final with a score of 4-2. Josten had been on the pitch at all three games in June 1957. In the 1957/58 season, Josten was only called up once, but then managed to return to the first team. After participating in the championship finals, the DSV fell back into the middle of the table in the late 1950s.

In the season 1960/61 the team could only just keep the class and the club also got increasingly into financial difficulties. Josten was already considered much less often and finally played only five games in the 1961/62 season. In 1962, the DSV rose as a knocked-down bottom in the league and the now 34-year-old Josten left the club. In a total of nine league seasons between 1950 and 1951 and 1954 and 1962, he had come to 162 disputed games with one goal. In addition, there are three years in the second division and his participation in the German championship finals in 1957. The history of the Duisburg game club ended two years after his departure when Eintracht Duisburg emerged from a merger .
