Paul Kelly (singer, 1940)

Paul Kelly (born June 19, 1940 in Miami , Florida , † October 4, 2012 in Ruby , South Carolina ) was an American soul and R&B singer.

Kelly has been a singer since the late 1950s. His first single as a lead singer was a song by Clarence Reed & the Delmiros . When the actual singer had a sore throat, Kelly stepped in when recording Sooner or Later . A little later he released the first single under his own name with The Upset . In 1965 he was signed by the Philips label. His controversial but commercially successful song Stealing in the Name of the Lord became a minor hit in the US in 1970, rising to number 14 on the Billboard R&B charts.

In 1972 he went to Warner Brothers , where the 1975 single Get Sexy was released. Get Sexy became a Top 40 hit in the Netherlands ; The single spent six weeks in the charts and peaked at # 14 in the early 1980s was his song Personally by various artists gecovert ; Karla Bonoff reached number 19 in the US pop charts, Ronnie McDowell brought him into the country music top ten. Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers performed some of Kelly's songs on a solo album. At the same time Kelly founded his own music label Laurence Records , which he ran under the pseudonym Laurence Dunbar until 1991. After heart problems and a heart attack in the mid-1990s, he withdrew into private life for a while, but was again active in the studio at the beginning of the new millennium. However, it has not been seen live since 1977.
