Paul Langerhans (born May 25, 1820 in Berlin ; † June 21, 1909 there ) was a German doctor and politician.

Life

Langerhans was the son of the architect Friedrich Wilhelm Langerhans . He attended the Berlinische Gymnasium zum Grau Kloster . He then studied medicine in Berlin, Paris and Vienna. In Berlin he became a member of the Corps Neoborussia . He was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . From 1843 he practiced as a doctor. His first marriage was to Anna Luise Caroline Keibel (1824-1853) and father of the pathologist of the same name, Paul Langerhans .

He took part in the March Revolution in Berlin in 1848 , was a leader in the cooperative sector and was considered a co-founder of the German cooperative bank. He founded the Luisenstädtische Volksbank as early as 1843. He also worked in various educational and political associations and was also active in the Protestant Church, including as a member of the parish council of St. Thomas Church (Berlin) and the district and city synod. In 1861 he was a co-founder of the German Progress Party . Later he belonged to the German Freedom Party and finally to the Freedom People's Party . From 1864 to 1868 he was a member of the Berlin Poor Commission. From 1875 he sat in the Berlin city council . From 1893 to 1907 he was head of the city council. For 29 years, from 1875 to 1904, he sat in the Prussian House of Representatives . From 1881 to 1903 he belonged with interruptions to the Reichstag (German Empire) . He was particularly committed to the social and health issues of the poor population and made outstanding contributions to the development of Berlin's health system.

In 1900 he was made an honorary citizen of Berlin. He is buried in an honorary grave of the city of Berlin in the Luisenstadt cemetery .
