Paul Meakin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Meakin (* 1944 ) is a British-American physicist and chemist who works in the field of statistical mechanics and especially on systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Life

Paul Meakin was born in England and studied chemistry at the University of Manchester until 1965 . He then moved to the University of California at Santa Barbara , where he received his doctorate in physical chemistry in 1969 . He then worked for DuPont's research and development department in Wilmington for 23 years . In 1992 he went to Norway and was professor at the University of Oslo until 2001 . After returning to the United States, he became Director of the Center for Advanced Modeling and Simulation at the Idaho National Laboratory of the Department of Energy .

Meakin is considered one of the most productive and most cited physicists and theoretical chemists. He made significant contributions to the understanding of complex systems far removed from thermodynamic equilibrium using methods of statistical mechanics. He published numerous works on diffusion-limited growth ( diffusion limited aggregation ) for patterning and fractals and multifractal and applications of these models in physics, chemistry, biology and earth sciences.

In 1989 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He is an external member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences . In 2007 he received the Gunnar Randers Research Award in Norway.
