Paul Meissner dealt with the questions of meaning in life. This discussion can be seen, for example, in the Hiroshima triptych, but also in the numerous so-called Golgotha pictures . For him, painting was an “exercise with an uncertain outcome”. This means that he was not interested in the finished work, but in the process of painting itself. For him, the painted canvas was just a relic. At the beginning of his work he painted figuratively, later he only painted abstract pictures. Meissner said in 1969: "I belong to the generation that began to paint abstractly because they saw the human grimace unveiled and no longer wanted to depict it." One of his best-known commissioned works is Das Wunderteam (1948), the one from 1931 Portrait of the successful Austrian national soccer team as they entered the stadium in England until 1933 .
