Paul Metzke
Paul Metzke (born September 11, 1945 in Detroit ) is an American jazz and fusion guitarist.
biography
Metzke was influenced by the Motown sound of his hometown in his youth and began playing the guitar at the age of twelve. With the song "Malaguena" he soon won a television talent competition. Under the influence of the music of Wes Montgomery , he founded his own jazz trio during high school. After a course at the Berklee Music School of Music , he went to New York, where he performed with Woody Shaw at the Village Gate . He studied music theory, composition and piano, among others with Hall Overton , Roland Hanna , Richie Beirach and Hal Galper ; he also played in Charlie Rouse's band , with whom the first recordings were made ( Two is One ).
From the mid-1970s Metzke became known through his participation in albums by Gato Barbieri ( Viva Emiliano Zapata , Impulse!, 1974), Paul Motian ( Psalm , ECM , 1974), the Gil Evans Orchestra ( There Comes a Time , 1975) , Joe Chambers ( New World , 1976) and Al Foster ( Mixed Roots , 1978). He also worked with Jim Hall throughout his career ; Lionel Hampton , Earl Klugh , Mike Mainieri , Dave Matthews , and Grover Washington Jr. In 2000, he starred alongside Randy Brecker , Lew Soloff , Ron Carter and Harold Danko on a tribute album directed by Teo Macero for Miles Davis ( Impressions ) . He is currently performing with his own trio in the New York area.
