Paul Monaghan

Paul Monaghan (born November 11, 1965 in Montrose ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Monaghan was born in Montrose, Angus , in 1965 . At the age of two he moved to Inverness with his family . He attended Inverness Royal Academy and then studied psychology and sociology at Stirling University . Monaghan graduated with a doctorate in social policy.

He is married and has one daughter. The family lives in Contin . He is active in various aid organizations, some in a leading position, and is organizationally active on the Thurso campus of the University of the Highlands and Islands .

Political career

In 1994 Monaghan joined the SNP. In the run-up to the referendum on Scottish independence in 2014 , Monaghan was the founder of the Yes Highland initiative , with which the SNP campaigned for an independent Scotland in the region.

In the British general election in 2015 , Monaghan ran for the SNP in the constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross . He stood up against the Liberal Democrat John Thurso , who had represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since 2001 . After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, Monaghan achieved the highest percentage of votes and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. He was a member of the Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. In the 2017 general election, Monaghan lost his seat in parliament to Jamie Stone of the Liberal Democrats.
