Jamie Stone
James Stone , (* 1954 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats .
Life
Stone attended the Tain Royal Academy and Gordonstoun School in Elgin . He then went to St Andrews University , where he graduated with a master's in geology and history. Stone worked as an English teacher in Catania in Sicily and in the food industry. Prior to his election to the Scottish Parliament , he had been a councilor for more than 13 years, first in the Ross and Cromarty region and then in the Highland region .
Political career
Scottish Parliament
For the first time Stone appeared in the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 to national elections. He ran in the constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross and was able to win the direct mandate with a clear lead over the candidates of the Labor Party and the SNP . He moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament and was able to defend his mandate in the following general elections in 2003 and 2007 . Like his party colleague John Farquhar Munro , Stone announced ahead of the 2011 parliamentary elections that he would not run for any further term and resigned from parliament at the end of the legislature. As part of the 2011 constituency reform, the constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross was dissolved and largely replaced by the newly created constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Ross . The direct mandate was won by Rob Gibson from SNP.
British House of Commons
Stones party colleague John Thurso had represented the constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross in the British House of Commons since 2001 . After losing his seat to the SNP candidate Paul Monaghan in the 2015 general election and was later elected to the House of Lords , he did not run for the 2017 general election . Stone was nominated to replace the Liberal Democrats in the constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross. On election day he was able to win a majority and subsequently moved into the lower house for the first time.
