Paul Karoly Pesthy (born March 25, 1938 in Budapest , Hungary , † October 28, 2008 in San Antonio ) was an American pentathlete and fencer .

Career

Pesthy was born in Budapest and immigrated to the United States in 1958. He had already started the modern pentathlon in his youth. He attended Rutgers University and won several college fencing championship titles in 1964 and 1965.

At the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo , he joined both Modern Pentathlon as well as in fencing. He finished 16th in the singles of the pentathlon and won the silver medal together with David Kirkwood and James Moore in the team competition . In epee fencing , he was eliminated individually and with the team in the preliminary round. In 1968 and 1976 he also took part in the Olympic Games, this time exclusively in fencing, but without much success.

At world championships in 1962 and 1963 he achieved his only podium finishes with the bronze medal in the team competition. Pesthy was three times American champion in modern pentathlon and five times in epee fencing. He also collected several titles with the fencing team.

After his active athletic career, he worked at San Antonio College in the Faculty of Sports.
