Paul Raud
Paul Raud (born October 11th July / October 23rd 1865 greg. In the village of Kirikuküla , then parish Sankt-Jakobi ; † November 22nd 1930 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian painter. Together with his twin brother Kristjan and Ants Laikmaa , he is considered one of the most influential artists in his country at the beginning of the 20th century.
Raud lost his father at an early age. With the help of his uncle Magnus, Raud's family came to Dorpat in 1881 , where he attended secondary school. In the house of the philosophy professor Gustav Teichmüller , Raud saw works by the painters Oskar Hoffmann and Julius von Klever . After completing secondary school, Raud first listened to Teichmüller's art history lectures and completed a year of military service before he decided to go to Germany for artistic training. There he studied painting between 1888 and 1894 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Heinrich Lauenstein , Hugo Crola , Peter Janssen , Adolf Schill and Eduard von Gebhardt . For this he received - mediated by Teichmüller - a stipend from the widowed Baroness Natalie von Uexküll (1833-1911) amounting to 40 rubles per month. After his return to Estonia, he mainly devoted himself to portrait and landscape painting . From 1911 he worked as a drawing teacher at the Imperial Art Academy of Saint Petersburg . In 1914 he moved to the Tallinn Commercial School for Girls as an art teacher .
