Paul Revel

Paul Revel , actually Paul Jean Revel (* 1922 in Cannes , Département Alpes-Maritimes , † April 19, 1983 in Paris ) was a French painter and engraver.

Live and act

Revel was the son of a gardener and spent most of his childhood in the country. When he met artists like Henri Ginet and Ladislas Kijno on the Plateau d'Assy after the Second World War , he also found his professional goal to be a painter.

In 1848 Revel went to Paris and was gladly accepted into their studios by Fernand Léger and André Lhote , among others . Supported by them, he was able to exhibit two works at the Salon des Indépendants the following year . Revel was very dissatisfied with his first work; he left Paris and settled at Le Midi . There he made the acquaintance of François Arnal , Pierre Gastaud and Romuald Dor de la Souchère . The latter supported him in 1956 to deny an exhibition alone in the Musée Picasso Antibes .

Revel came back to Paris two years later and stayed there for the rest of his life. Together with colleagues Pierre Gastaud and Henri Ginet, they established their studio in the basement of the former Théâtre Le Ranelagh ( 16th arrondissement ). Until the end of 1964 Revel was close to the artist group "Phases" and together with some of these artists he signed the manifesto of the 121 on September 6, 1960 .

At that time Revel had already started his own workshop in Impasse Delépine ( 11th arrondissement ). He was able to make a name for himself as an artist and soon made a living from his work alone. His works were regularly shown in exhibitions, which he did alone or together with colleagues such as Philippe Artias , Albert Féraud , Hubert Juin , Dietrich Mohr and others.

Paul Revel died of throat cancer on April 19, 1983 in Paris and was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery ( columbarium , no. 14057).
