Paul Scott "Paco" Lockhart (born April 28, 1956 in Amarillo , Texas ) is a former American astronaut .

education

Lockhart received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Texas Tech University in 1978 . He then went to Austria for a year , where he was able to study at the universities of Innsbruck and Vienna thanks to a scholarship . In 1981 he earned a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas . From 1981 Lockhart was in the United States Air Force . After completing his training, he was among other things an instructor for fighter pilots in Germany from 1987 to 1990 .

Astronaut activity

In April 1996 he was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA . At the Johnson Space Center he worked for the astronauts office and worked, among other things, on improving the space shuttle main engine (SSME) and the flight displays of the space shuttles.

STS-111

On June 5, 2002, he started as a pilot of the space shuttle Endeavor on his first flight into space . A new crew and the Canadian Mobile Base System as well as the Multipurpose Logistics Module (MPLM) Leonardo were brought to the International Space Station (ISS). Because of bad weather, Lockhart had to land the Endeavor after 13 days at Edwards Air Force Base in California .

STS-113

On November 24, 2002, he flew with the Endeavor again to the International Space Station. STS-113 was the last shuttle mission in 2002 and also the last successful flight before the Columbia space shuttle crashed two months later. The Endeavor transported the lattice structure P1 for further expansion of the space station. The 12-ton structure was assembled on three space exits. In addition, Expedition 5 was replaced by three new astronauts from Expedition 6 .

Private

Lockhart and his wife Theresa have two children.
