Hans-Jürgen Rathert

Hans-Jürgen Rathert (born May 6, 1933 in Ladbergen ; † January 13, 1977 in Minden , Westphalia ) was a German local politician of the SPD . From 1971 to 1977 Rathert was mayor of the city of Minden.

Life and work

Rathert studied German, educational science, history and philosophy at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen from 1953 to 1958 . After completing his studies, he was initially a speaker for school courses at the Place of Encounter in Vlotho , where he met the sociologist Annelie Keil , the historian Reinhard Rürup , the educationalist Werner Treuheit and the publicists Manfred Jäger and Heinz Klunker . In 1964 he was appointed to the faculty at Herder-Gymnasium Minden . From 1974 he headed the Weser-Kolleg Minden as founding director and senior director of studies . Rathert was married and the father of four sons; his oldest son is the musicologist Wolfgang Rathert .

Political commitment

Until his death, Rathert was a member of the SPD on the city ​​council of Minden, where he held leading positions in his parliamentary group (including chairman); He received strong support from Max Ingberg . In the 1960s Rathert took a public position against the campaigns of the Holocaust denier Udo Walendy . Under his aegis as mayor, with the support of city ​​director Erwin Niermann , he initiated the first, highly controversial redevelopment of Minden's inner city, which affected the Weser Gate and the area between the old town hall and the cathedral.

Public offices

Hans-Jürgen Rathert was following the resignation of Mayor Werner Pohle (SPD) on 17 December 1971 by the city council elected mayor of Minden. He carried out this office until his death on January 13, 1977, and was succeeded by Heinz Röthemeier (SPD).
