The Herder-Gymnasium in the city of Minden with Caroline-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium in the East Westphalian city of Minden is a city-sponsored grammar school and one of three grammar schools in the district town of Minden.

history

The Herder high school in Minden

The Herder-Gymnasium has existed at the current location in Brüningstrasse in the middle of Mindener Glacis since 1964. In 1988 it was merged with the Caroline von Humboldt High School. Since then it has been known under the name Herder-Gymnasium with Caroline-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium, founded in 1826 .

Caroline-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium

The Caroline-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium was founded as a secondary school for girls under the name Städtische Mindener Töchterschule in 1826. In the first few years, daughters of upscale middle-class families were taught in rented rooms at Hohe Strasse 6. In 1861 the school received its own school building at the Martinikirchhof. In 1895 the company moved to its current location on Brüningstrasse. From then on it was run as a girls' high school . In 1909 it was recognized as a higher educational institution , consisting of the higher girls' school (429 pupils) with a lyceum (74 pupils) and a teacher training college as an upper level. In 1923, training for general university entrance qualifications began, which was first completed in 1926 by six female high school graduates. Since the 1920s, the school was operated as a modern language girls' high school with a women's upper school . On October 24, 1963, the girls' high school moved into the new building on the former Königsplatz between Königswall and the Botanical Garden. In July 1967, the institution was named Caroline von Humboldt Gymnasium in honor of Caroline von Humboldt . Caroline von Humboldt was born into the Dacheröden family in Minden. In 1974 the school was transformed into a coeducational high school for girls and boys.

Herder High School

When the girls' high school moved to the former Königsplatz, the renovation of the buildings on Brüningstrasse began. The city planned to build a fourth grammar school next to the Bessel grammar school , the council grammar school and the girls' grammar school. For cost reasons, however, no new building could be financed. In 1964, the municipal grammar school for boys and girls began. For this purpose, pupils from the girls' grammar school and the Bessel grammar school switched to the new grammar school. It consisted of eight boys 'classes with 214 students and other girls' classes, as well as a boys 'and a girls' sexta . Girls and boys were taught separately. In 1966, the Herder was expanded to include a three-year advanced level for secondary school graduates. Since then, lessons have been co-educational under the name of the Städtisches Neusprachliches Gymnasium for boys and girls in a build-up for secondary school graduates. In July 1967 the school was given its current name, Herder-Gymnasium , in honor of Johann Gottfried Herder , who was court preacher in Bückeburg for five years and thus had a home connection to the region.

In the 1980s, the city began planning to build a comprehensive school, which was accompanied by political disputes . In view of the falling number of pupils at the four grammar schools, one of them should be closed. The decision was made between the Caroline-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium and the Herder-Gymnasium, whereby the former usually had a higher number of students and thus produced more high school graduates. In addition, the Caroline-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium was in a relatively good state of construction and offered space for building extensions. Nevertheless, the number of registrations for the new fifth grade was ultimately decisive. At the Herder, slightly more students registered for the new school year, so that the city council of Minden decided to close the Caroline-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium. Both schools have been cooperating since the 1986/87 school year and at the end of the 1987/88 school year the Caroline von Humboldt Gymnasium was attached to the Herder Gymnasium. At the former location of the Caroline-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium, expansion and renovation work began for the new comprehensive school. At the same time as the construction work, the Kurt Tucholsky Comprehensive School in Minden started operating in September 1986 .

Despite the merger of the two schools, the number of students in the 1990s was at the level of the 1970s with 800 to 900 students. Even the extended use of the former Heideschule as a branch office could not solve the actual problem of the need for renovation and the need for an extended new building complex. At the end of the 1990s, the city began extensive structural renovations of the two old buildings and the construction of an extension wing. This was completed in 2003 and the renovation of the old building ended in 2007. With the start of urban investments, the number of pupils also rose again. Since the 2005/06 school year, over 100 pupils have passed the Abitur every year and the high point in 2012/13 thanks to the double Abitur class with 280 graduates.

In 2014 the school celebrated its 50th anniversary. Up to this point in time, around 4,500 students had taken their Abitur.
