Paul Sheriff

Paul Sheriff (birth name: Russian Павел Александрович Шувалов , Pawel Alexandrowitsch Schuwalow , also: Paul Schouvaloff ; born November 13, 1903 in Moscow ; † September 25, 1960 in London ) was a British art director and set designer from Russia who was awarded the 1953 Academy Awards won the Oscar for best production design in the color film Moulin Rouge (1952).

Life

A native of Russia Sheriff studied after school at the University of Oxford and began his career as an art director and set designers in the film industry in 1938 with the film The Divorce of Lady X . He worked on the production of over thirty films until his death.

1947 he was with Carmen Dillon nominated for the Academy Award for Best Production Design, specifically for the color film Henry V (1944), one of Laurence Olivier staged historical drama after the eponymous drama William Shakespeare with Olivier, Felix Aylmer and Leo Genn in the Leading roles .

For the production design in by John Huston turned biopic of the French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec entitled Moulin Rouge (1952) and Jose Ferrer , Zsa Zsa Gabor and Colette Marchand in the leading roles he received at the Academy Awards in 1953 together with Marcel Vertès the Oscar for the best production design.
