Paul Daniel Smith (born December 17, 1979 in Epsom ) is an English football player who has been under contract with the English fourth division club Southend United since 2012 .

Athletic career

Brentford FC

Paul Smith began his professional career at Charlton Athletic . In the club from east London he was not used and therefore moved to Carshalton Athletic in 1999, a lower-class club from south London. In August 2000, Smith moved to Brentford FC , a club from west London. Brentford was playing in the third highest English division at this time. Paul Smith came here regularly for the first time and finished 14th out of 24 teams with his new club at the end of the season. The 2001/02 season was very successful for Brentford. At the end of the season, the club was in third place, but missed promotion in the subsequent play-offs. In the following two seasons, Brentford FC could no longer build on this performance and found themselves with places 16 and 17 in the lower parts of the league.

Southampton FC

Due to financial problems, the club was forced to sell Paul Smith to Southampton FC in January 2004 for around £ 500,000 . Smith could not fight for a regular place at the club from Southampton, however, as Antti Niemi was often preferred.

Nottingham Forest

In July 2006, Paul Smith moved to Nottingham Forest for approximately £ 500,000 , where he signed a three-year contract. He spent his first season in 2006/07 as a regular goalkeeper in Football League One . At the end of the season Nottingham was in fourth place, only 3 points behind the direct promotion position 2. In the play-offs Forest had to give way to Blackpool FC . In the 2007/08 season he was promoted to the Football League Championship with second place . Paul Smith, meanwhile, played a good season and was named the league's best goalkeeper. With the start of the Football League Championship in 2008/09 he played one league higher. Before the start of the season, he signed a new 2-year contract. In October 2008, however, Lee Camp came on loan from league rivals Queens Park Rangers to Forest and displaced Paul Smith from his place between the posts. The new coach Billy Davies relied on the strong playing camp in the following years, so that Paul Smith only made four competitive appearances in the 2009/10 season . Nevertheless, he extended his contract to 2012 during the course of the year.

On March 8, 2011, he moved on loan to league rivals Middlesbrough FC and played ten league games for the second division club until the end of the season.

Southend United

After his contract in Nottingham was not renewed, he moved to the English fourth division club Southend United on August 20, 2012 .
