Paul Suter (geographer)

Paul Suter (born August 17, 1899 in Oberdorf BL , † October 20, 1989 in Reigoldswil ) was a Swiss teacher, geographer and local researcher.

Life

After attending primary school in his home community and the Waldenburg district school, he attended the Realgymnasium in Basel, where he acquired the primary school teacher certificate from the canton of Basel-Stadt. He later studied German, French, English and history in Basel and Lausanne and passed the district teacher examination for the Canton of Solothurn. In 1925 he submitted his dissertation to the natural science faculty of the University of Basel: Contributions to the landscape of the Ergolz area.

From 1947 to 1964 Suter was rector of the secondary school in Reigoldswil. In addition to numerous honorary positions, he researched the history of his homeland. From 1936 he published the series Baselbieter Heimatblätter . The Baselbieter Heimatbuch followed as a yearbook in 1942 . He was President of the Commission "Sources and Research on the History and Regional Studies of the Canton of Basel". In addition, he wrote articles and articles in newspapers. Together with Willy Stäheli and the folklorist and writer Eduard Strübin (1914–2000), Suter published the book «Baselbieter Sagen» in 1976 for the Basel-Landschaft publishing house.

The municipality of Reigoldswil made Suter an honorary citizen.
