Paul Swietlicki (Polish: Paweł Świetlicki wikidata ; born January 13, 1699 in Osterwein , Osterode district , Duchy of Prussia ; † November 9, 1756 in Danzig , Polish-Prussia ) was a Polish Lutheran preacher in Danzig and a founding member of the Natural Research Society .

Life

The father Martin Swietlicki was a Protestant pastor in Osterwein, the mother Catharina Schnitzenbäumer daughter of the pastor Johann Schnitzenbäumer from Osterode or German Eylau. Paul Swietlicki attended the Johannesschule and since 1712 the Academic Gymnasium in Gdansk. In 1720 he enrolled at the University of Rostock and in 1722 in Wittenberg .

In 1724 he moved from there first to the Netherlands and then to Paris , where he worked the following year in the service of the Swedish ambassador Peter von Gedda (as private tutor?). In 1726 he went to England to teach the von der Lippe family, where he had contacts with well-known scholars in Oxford and Cambridge . In 1728 Swietlicki was ordained a Lutheran preacher in London and then returned to Paris to the Swedish legation.

In 1729 Paul Swietlicki was invited by the city council to become a preacher at the Polish St. Anne's Chapel in Danzig and a teacher of the Polish language at the Academic Gymnasium. From 1734 he was a deacon at St. John's Church and from 1750 pastor there until the end of his life.

Paul Swietlicki was one of the founding members of the Natural Research Society in Gdansk in 1743. He took part in the latest knowledge about electricity research and dealt with problems of mechanics. His theology was shaped by rationalism and pietism. That is why there was a long theological dispute with the preacher Johann Daniel Kickebusch from the St. Johannes Hospital from 1736, who accused him of deviating teachings. The dispute had no negative consequences for Swietlicki, as the city council supported him as his employer.

Paul Swietlicki was married and had several children.

He published some theological writings, including his dissertation in Latin.
