Gareth Edmund Malone OBE (born November 9, 1975 in London ) is a British choir director and showmaster.
biography
Gareth Malone comes from a musical family and during his school years he sang in choirs, at school performances and other occasions. But then he first studied acting at the University of East Anglia before he followed a vocal training at the London Royal Academy of Music . He then worked for the London Symphony Orchestra .
In 2005 he was won over for a reality series on television about the selection and training of choir students. In The Choir he formed a singing group from talented choir beginners, which took part in the 4th Choir Olympiad in China the following year . The series was very successful and won a BAFTA television award . Two sequels to the format, The Choir: Boys Don't Sing and The Choir: Unsung Town , and appearances on other shows made Malone a well-known television personality.
The Choir: Military Wives with relatives of soldiers from the British Army followed in 2011 . The resulting choir of the Military Wives won the race for Christmas number one at the end of the year with the song Wherever You Are . The choir remained successful after that and released several chart albums.
Another British show called Sing While You Work was followed by an offshoot of the Choir series in the USA as It Takes a Choir in 2013 . From April to October he directed the Voices project , a classical choir that performed modern songs. An album that was subsequently recorded brought it to the charts in November. The following year he went on tour with Voices and also implemented the concept with a celebrity choir. Gareth Malone's All Star Choir had in November 2014 Wake Me Up by Avicii a number-one hit. It was a charity campaign for Children in Need .
In 2016 Malone recorded the anthem Flesh and Blood for the Invictus Games , the international games for the disabled . He then moved across the country and recorded a Christmas album with community choirs and local music groups. A Great British Christmas also hit the charts. The following year he worked with the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire . After a break and a difficult time for him personally, he processed his experiences in his third album Music for Healing in 2019 .
In 2020, the corona pandemic made normal choir work impossible. He took the Internet videos of people who sang daily for doctors and nurses in Italy as a model and created the Great British Home Chorus . He also collected voices online singing You Are My Sunshine by Johnny Cash . With the musical support of musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra, he put it together into a single that became another chart success in August of that year.
