Paul Thymich
Paul Thymich or Thiemich (born June 17, 1656 in Großenhain , † 1694 in Leipzig ) was a German poet.
Life
Paul Thymich studied at the Thomasschule in Leipzig. He studied at the University of Leipzig. From 1681 to 1694 he was a teacher at the Thomas School. He emerged as a poet of sacred and secular songs and as a librettist for the Leipzig Opera and the Weißenfelser Hof.
He wrote the eleven-verse text Come, Jesus, come for a funeral motet set to music by Thomaskantor Johann Schelle for the funeral of the Thomas School rector Jacob Thomasius († September 9, 1684). Johann Sebastian Bach later took up their 1st and 11th stanzas when composing his own funeral motets of the same name, which together with their sibling works belong to the pinnacle of western vocal polyphony. Thymich's text follows closely the biblical text of the Gospel of John in chapter 14.6: I am the way, the truth and the life, nobody comes to the Father but through me.
