Paul Archer Tyler, Baron Tyler CBE DL (born October 29, 1941 ) is a British politician of the Liberal Party and now the Liberal Democrats , who was a member of the House of Commons for several years and has been a member of the House of Lords since 2005 .

Life

Local politician and member of the House of Commons

In the mid-1960s, Tyler began his political career in local politics and was a member of the County Council of Devon from 1964 to 1970, and during that time from 1965 to 1970 he was also a member of the Police Department for Devon and Cornwall and vice-chair of the committee for the Dartmoor National Park .

In the general election on March 31, 1966 , Tyler ran for the first time unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons, namely for the Liberal Party in the constituency of Totnes . After he ran again unsuccessfully in the general election on June 18, 1970 in the constituency of Bodmin , he was elected a member of the lower house in the general election on February 28, 1974 in the constituency of Bodmin , but lost this mandate again in the elections of October 10, 1974 . Subsequently, from 1974 to 1981, Tyler was chairman of the Council for the Protection of the Rural Workers' Party of England for the Future of the Villages.

In the constituency Bodmin he ran in the general election on May 3, 1979 again without success for a re-entry into the House of Commons, as well as in a by-election ( by-election ) 1982 in the constituency of Beaconsfield . At that time, Tyler was chairman of the Liberal Party in Devon and Cornwall from 1981 to 1982, and then from 1983 to 1986 a member of the Liberal Party's National Executive Committee. In this role he was also campaign advisor to Liberal Chairman David Steel for the 1983 and 1987 general elections .

Finally, Tyler was re-elected to the House of Commons for the Liberal Democrats founded in 1988 in the general election on April 9, 1992 , and represented the constituency of Cornwall North until May 5, 2005 .

During his long membership in the House of Tyler was between 1992 and 1994 initially spokesman for the faction of the Liberal Democrats for Agriculture and Rural Affairs, then to 1997 for agriculture, tourism and Rural Affairs.

He then from 1997 to 2005 "shadow" leader of the lower house ( Shadow Leader of the House of Commons ) and, as such, also between 1997 and 2001 Parliamentary General Manager ( Chief Whip ) of the Liberal Democrats. In addition, Tyler acted from 1997 to 1999 as group spokesman for nutrition and most recently between 2001 and 2005 as spokesman for the group of the Liberal Democrats for constitutional reform.

House of Lords

Tyler decided not to run again in the general election on May 5, 2005 and was then raised to the nobility by a letters patent as a life peer with the title Baron Tyler , of Linkinhorne in the County of Cornwall . On 15 June 2005, he was followed by introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords .

During his tenure in the House of Lords, Lord Tyler served as Constitutional Affairs Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats between 2006 and May 2010. At the same time he was spokesman for his group for the environment, food and rural affairs from 2008 to 2009.

Lord Tyler, who was the director of Make Votes Count from 2005 to 2010, also served as Cornwall Deputy Lieutenant from 2005 to 2010 .
