Paul Viiding (born May 22, 1904 in Walk , Livonia Governorate , † June 27, 1962 in Tallinn , Estonian Soviet Republic ) was an Estonian writer, literary critic and translator.

Life and work

Paul Viiding graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in mathematics in 1930 . He first worked for the insurance company Oma before he became a freelance writer in Tartu . At the end of the 1930s he was employed by the Estonian Radio in Tallinn .

After the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Viiding was secretary of the Estonian SSR Writers' Union . However, he soon fell out of favor with the new rulers and had to work as a bookseller. From 1953 he was able to work as a writer again and in 1956 was again accepted into the Writers' Union.

Viiding's literary career began in the 1930s. In 1938 he was one of the founders of the Arbujad literary movement . He published numerous short stories , poems and a novel . Viiding was also known as a translator from Russian ( Gogol , Radishchev , Gorki ) and from German ( Schiller ).

Private life

Paul Viiding was married to Linda Viiding. The couple had three daughters and their son Juhan Viiding , who became a writer himself. Paul Viiding is the grandfather of the Estonian poet Elo Viiding .
