In 1491 he received his doctorate in law . He had been teaching the Saxon princes Georg , Heinrich and Friedrich since the mid-1480s . He also accompanied Friedrich on his study trips to Italy, received minor orders and various canonicals in 1496 , but when he became Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, he followed Friedrich to Königsberg in Prussia to serve as Chancellor .

In February 1500 he turned down the bishopric of Courland that had been offered to him , as well as the diocese of Pomesania in May 1501 , but accepted the election as Bishop of Samland on July 16, 1503, although he was officially Chancellor until the end of 1503 and later as confirmed bishop continued to take part in the administration of the order, although his health was already very weak.

Paul von Watt did not live to see his episcopal ordination , which had been postponed several times since September 1504 . He died on April 25, 1505 and was buried in Königsberg Cathedral.
