Paula von Rosthorn

Paula von Rosthorn , née Pichler (* December 2, 1873 - November 11, 1967 ) made a name for herself through her personal commitment during the Chinese Boxer Rebellion in 1900 and her later publications on the course and background of the unrest.

origin

Her parents were the dentist Johann Pichler and his wife Jozia Kner , a daughter of the zoologist Rudolf Kner . The Austrian dentist and maxillofacial surgeon Johann Pichler (1877-1947) was her brother.

Life

Paula Pichler came from the Austrian industrial family Rosthorn and was a great-granddaughter of Matthäus von Rosthorn the Younger. She married the sinologist and diplomat Arthur von Rosthorn (* 1862, † 1945), who was himself a grandson of John von Rosthorn (a brother of the above-mentioned Matthew). Paula von Rosthorn stood as a diplomat's wife her husband aside, the 1895 to 1906 as chargé d'affaires and from 1911 to 1917 as Minister in charge of the Austrian Embassy in Beijing.

During the defense of the Legation Quarter, she cared for the wounded, helped build barricades and took over post services on the battle line. For her tireless and unparalleled commitment, she was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor , and in 1903 Emperor Franz Joseph I awarded her the War Medal 1873 in honor of her services .
