Arthur Edler von Rosthorn (born April 14, 1862 in Vienna , † December 17, 1945 in Oed , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian sinologist and diplomat .

Life

Arthur von Rosthorn, a member of the Rosthorn family of industrialists , studied German and comparative linguistics at the University of Vienna from 1880 to 1883 . In 1883 he studied Chinese at Oxford University and then worked in various cities for the Chinese maritime customs administration. From 1886 he was in the diplomatic service of Austria-Hungary . In 1895 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In the same year he was charge of the delegation in Beijing. From 1906 to 1911 he was envoy to Persia, from 1911 to 1917 envoy to China. In 1919 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna , in 1922 honorary professor of Sinology at the University of Vienna.

In 1938 his honorary professorship was revoked.

He married Paula Pichler (1873–1967) in Vienna in 1895 , who was best known for her description of the defense of the Legation Quarter in Beijing.

In 1961 Rosthorngasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.

The award is named after Arthur von Rosthorn and has been given since 1986 to people or organizations who have made merits in the field of Sino-Austrian relations. The Arthur von Rosthorn Medal was donated by the Austria-Chinese Society (ÖCGF) and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for China and Southeast Asia Research .
