Pauline Carolus-Duran: Portrait d'Alice Hoschedé

Pauline Carolus-Duran was born in Saint Petersburg to Achille Jean Baptiste Boucher and Louise Carbonna Croizette. Both parents were French, the mother performed as a dancer at the Mariinsky Theater . Her sister Sophie Croizette later became an actress. Both sisters were acquainted with the actress Sarah Bernhardt , whom Pauline Carolus-Duran described in her memoir as "calm", "cold" and "beautiful".

She received her training as a painter in Edme-Adolphe Fontaine’s studio . While copying paintings in the Louvre , she met the painter Carolus-Duran in 1868 , who supported her in her painting and gave her lessons. Both married that same year. From this marriage there were three children. The daughter Marie-Anne later married the playwright Georges Feydeau .

Pauline Carolus-Duran repeatedly posed for her husband. In the painting Le Baiser ( Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille ) from 1868 both spouses are shown kissing in love, in a portrait of an artist in her studio ( La Salle University Art Museum , Philadelphia) he shows the painter at the easel. In 1869 her husband painted her as La dame au gant ( Musée d'Orsay , Paris), a picture that was a great success in the salon of the same year.

From 1864 to 1875 Pauline Carolus-Duran exhibited several portraits of women in the Salon de Paris . In addition, she painted a number of miniatures and created numerous pastel pictures . The critic Jules Claretie certified her a "talent rare" ( rare talent ). She was accepted into the Société des Artistes Français in 1887 .

Individual evidence

  1. The artist is known primarily as Pauline Carolus-Duran . She is mentioned under this name in Judith Cernogora: Portraits de femmes , p. 40. The online database culture.gouv.fr also runs them under this name. It is also listed under the surname Carolus-Duran in the Thieme / Becker artist lexicon and in the Bénézit dictionary. The mention of a painter under her maiden name Croizette, however, is unusual.
