Jules Claretie (actually Arsène Arnaud Claretie ; born December 3, 1840 in Limoges , Haute-Vienne , † December 23, 1913 in Paris ) was a French writer, theater critic, director and journalist.

Life

Claretie came to Paris and studied at the Lycée impérial Bonaparte . Subsequently, he got a job with the daily newspapers Le Figaro and Opinion Nationale as a theater critic. He later also worked for Le Soir and La Presse . During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870/71 he reported as a war correspondent . He took part in the events of the Paris Commune as a staff officer of the National Guard .

At Jules Grévy's request and with his support, Claretie was appointed director of the Comédie-Française in 1885 . As a journalist, Claretie already had to write plays, novels and some non-fiction books under various pseudonyms in addition to his job .

The Académie française appointed Claretie in 1888 to succeed the late Alfred-Auguste Cuvillier-Fleury on the 35 armchair .

Jules Claretie died in Paris on December 23, 1913, twenty days after his 73rd birthday. He found his final resting place in the cemetery of Père Lachaise (4th division); the tombstone was created by the sculptor Louis Patriarche (1872–1955).
