Pauline Starke (born January 10, 1901 in Joplin , Missouri , † February 3, 1977 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American actress of the silent film era .

Life

Pauline Starke was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1901. After graduating from high school, she came to the film industry through the contacts of a friend. In 1916, Starke received her first small film role as a dancer in David Wark Griffiths Intolerance . After further extras she was discovered in 1917 by the director Frank Borzage , who from then on cast her for the female lead in several of his films.

In 1922, Starke was voted one of thirteen WAMPAS Baby Stars who, according to the jury, have a great career ahead of them. With the advent of talkies, however, Starke's film career slowly waned. In 1935 she officially ended her career as an actress after more than sixty film roles, but was then seen two more times in small supporting roles: 1941 in She Knew All the Answers and 1943 in The Little Angel . However, Starke was not featured in the credits in either of the films. Then she finally retired from acting.

Pauline Starke was married twice. The first marriage in 1927 with the film producer Jack White was divorced in 1937, the second marriage with the actor George Sherwood lasted until Starke's death. She died of a stroke on February 3, 1977 in Santa Monica at the age of 76. Starke was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park .

For her contributions to the film industry, Starke received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
