Paulino Rivero Baute (born February 11, 1952 in El Sauzal , Tenerife , Spain ) is a Spanish politician in the Canary Islands , an autonomous community of Spain . From July 13, 2007 to July 9, 2015 he was Presidente del Gobierno de Canarias (≈ Prime Minister).

Life

Paulino Rivero studied at the University of La Laguna . He is chairman of the Canarian regional party Coalición Canaria .

Until 1979 he practiced the profession of teacher. In the first democratic elections in Spain, he was elected mayor of his hometown El Sauzal in the north of Tenerife. He held this office until 2007. First he belonged to the Democratic Center Association , and then from 1983 to the ATI party (Independent Party of Tenerife). This dissolved, with parts of it today in the Coalición Canaria (CC). In 1996 he made the leap into national politics and was a member of the Cortes Generales in Madrid for Santa Cruz de Tenerife for several legislative terms.

In 2007 Paulino Rivero was named by his party (CC) as a candidate for the presidency of the government of the Canary Islands. His party did not get a majority in the May 27, 2007 elections, but after coalition negotiations on July 13, 2007 he officially took over the office of President of the Canary Islands .

Paulino Rivero is married and has two sons.
