action

For nine-year-old Paul, everything is different for the first time this Christmas: After his parents split up, he and his heavily pregnant mother Maya move from their luxurious home in the tranquil countryside to their new friend Julius and his daughter Lilly in metropolitan Berlin. While artist Maya and pool attendant Julius leave no stone unturned in getting Paul used to the new situation, Paul is secretly mourning the familiar threesome in his old home. He finds a contact person in Leonidas, a man-sized wooden angel that his mother created.

When Paul Leonidas complains of his suffering on the balcony one evening, a miracle happens: After an unintentional but happily caught fall through his children's room wall, Paul notices that he can walk through walls. He uses his newly acquired ability for all sorts of mischief. So he not only sneaks into the room of "Bonus Sister" Lilly, but also peeks out his locked away Christmas presents, plays pranks on the neighbors, temporarily disappears his dictation at school to correct it and steals some items in the neighboring toy store.

When Kofi, owner of the Spätis on the first floor and Paul's confidante, points out to him that magic should only be used to achieve good, Paul decides to use his talent for his greatest wish: Maya and his father Matz should get together again . But Paul's endeavor to reunite his parents with his gift only leads to greater misfortune for everyone involved: Matz decides to take the trip over Christmas, which Paul has secretly canceled, while Julius, after a misunderstanding and argument caused by Paul, with his ex-wife Joana takes the suitcase and temporarily moves out of the shared apartment with Lilly.

Maya then decides to dispose of Leonidas. When she went into labor during the transport, Paul managed to use his skills to call Julius at work and to trace his mother's calls. Together with Matz and Lilly, they find Maya, who is about to give birth, in her car on the edge of a lonely forest, where Paul breaks into an empty house and shortly afterwards his half-sister is born. With the birth of his sister, his gift disappears and Paul realizes that his parents' separation was for the better for both families. A few days later, the blended family with Matz and Joana come to their apartment for Christmas.

Reviews

The supporting cast around Petra Schmidt-Schaller received mostly positive reviews.

Tilmann P. Gangloff from Tittelbach.tv described Paul's Christmas wish as "a harmless, but heart-touching tragic comedy" whose broadcast "would also fit into the evening program". The production is "not one of those children's films in which the adults act as overdrawn supporting characters" and shows with its "sarcastic dialogues that Paul's Christmas wish is not a children's film". While Gangloff expressed criticism of the childrens film staging by leading actor Jeremy Miliker , he found praise above all for the pictures and the ensemble: “After all, the film tricks are all the more convincing. With their warm colors, the pictures create a cozy atmosphere, the actors are as good as you can expect from them, with Nele Trebs noticeably keeping up with the prominent colleagues ”.

"Even after an hour you don't really know what the supernatural kitsch attack is leading to the magic of Christmas in Paul's Christmas wish," said Heike Hupertz from the epd . The actors, especially the actor who played little Paul, looked “as if they had been let down by the director. Hardly any believable magic emanates from this little superhero. Schmidt-Schaller, Koeberlin and Stein, on the other hand, play their relationship triangle drama seriously like in a Wednesday ARD film. ”For child viewers, this is a patchwork success story“ only to a limited extent ”, with Nele Trebs as a pubescent new sister“ a bright spot ”. Certz's script has "a touching Christmas basic idea, but completely forfeited the charm of its story on the line [...] Magical moments: Paul's Christmas wish is like children's punch without sugar - to make a sour belching."

Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung reviewer Elke Schröder declared the television film to be an “entertaining children's feature film” and a “magical festival story”. The consequences of the initial situation of the film made it “quickly predictable and made for a few dramatic lengths. But the enthusiasm of the ensemble makes up for it ”. TV Spielfilm called Paul's Christmas wish "cheeky, wise, bitter and ... magical".
