Paulus Rappold
Paulus Rappold OCist (born August 15, 1938 in Frohnleiten as Franz Rappold ; † June 26, 2000 in Graz ) was the 54th abbot of Rein Abbey .
Life
Franz Rappold entered the Cistercian religious order in 1966 after training as a bricklayer and then graduating from high school , where he received the religious name Paulus. On July 5, 1971, with papal dispensation, he was ordained a priest, which according to canon law could not have taken place until a year later. Just three days later, on July 8, 1971, the new priest was elected prior administrator following the resignation of Abbot Aelred Pexa . On June 27, 1973 the convent chapter elected him 54th abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Rein- Hohenfurth . In the same year, under the leadership of Rappold, the general renovation of the ailing monastery building and the establishment of an in-house carpentry and fishing industry began. In 1983 he finished his theological doctoral studies at the University of Graz with a dissertation on the path of catechetical preaching from Didache to Origen .
The brisk construction activity led to financial inconsistencies in the millions. Because of fraud and embezzlement, he was relieved of his office in 1986 after an extraordinary visit by Abbot President Dominik Nimmervoll and was imprisoned. Abbot Rappold was expelled from the convention after the final conviction.
