Paul de Castro

Paulus de Castro , also Paulus Castrensis (* 1360 or 1362 in Castro , † July 20, 1441 in Padua ) was an Italian legal scholar.

life and work

Castro studied law with Baldus de Ubaldis in Perugia . From around 1380 he was also a student of Christophorus de Castiglione in Pavia . In 1386 Castro acquired the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque at the University of Avignon and then worked there as a law teacher. With regard to his subsequent life, there are some ambiguities due to contradictory statements made by Castro. According to Savigny , it is most likely that Castro only worked briefly in Avignon and went to Siena around 1390 to teach there as a professor. He held this position until 1394, in between he may have worked in Pavia. In any case, Castro taught at the University of Avignon from 1394 to 1401 and then at the University of Florence until 1403 . From February 1 to July 31, 1404 he was Podestà of Viterbo . He then received a call from the University of Siena , where he taught for an unknown period. What is certain, however, is that he taught again in Florence from 1413 to 1414 and certainly in Siena since 1422. In 1416 Castro was involved in the overhaul of the city charter in Florence and temporarily administered a vicariate . From 1424 to 1429 he was a professor at the University of Bologna and finally from 1429 until his death in 1441 at the University of Padua . Castro was also the protégé and temporarily auditor of Cardinal Francesco Zabarella . Sometimes his death is also set at 1436 or 1437, which, according to Savigny, is refuted by credible documents.

Like his teacher Baldus de Ubaldis, Paulus de Castro dealt primarily with Roman law . During his studies, Castro was characterized by a "critical sense that was not often used at the time [...]" in relation to the sources. The main part of his writings deals with the exegesis of Roman traditions.
