Pausenkatzen is a 28-minute film that was made in 1970 by Hessischer Rundfunk as a pause filler. The film was shot by the writer Eva Demski , who was culture editor at the Hessischer Rundfunk at the time.

The short film was shown in sections of different lengths during program breaks on the hr television . In the off-peak times of the program, the Hessischer Rundfunk still shows sequences of the cats during the break (an excerpt of about six minutes, running in a loop and clipped to widescreen format) under the name hr-Katzen .

content

The film shows a litter of young cats playing in different cuts . In some sequences, the old animal can be seen briefly watching the young from the edge of the scene. The setting is a pyramid made of cubes in an otherwise empty studio. The letters "h" and "r", the Hessischer Rundfunk logo, are cut into the cubes . The music is accompanied by Fats Waller's “Wild Cat Blues” in a version by Henry Arland , clarinet, together with the Hans Bertram orchestra from the 1972 Polydor production “Clarinet Fascination”.

background

The young cats came from a Frankfurt animal shelter , where they could not be looked after and should therefore be euthanized. Eva Demki's father Rudolf Küfner, who worked as a set designer for the Hessischer Rundfunk, took care of the animals. This gave rise to the idea for the short film , which was shot as a low-budget film .

After the break cats were broadcast for the first time, many viewers called the Hessischer Rundfunk so that the young cats could be passed on to cat lovers. This gave rise to the idea for the series " Herrchen sucht ".

New edition 2015

On the occasion of IFA 2015, hr and Eutelsat produced a new edition of the recreational cats in UHD resolution. The new film was shown from September 3rd on the UHD demo channel 4k1 in HEVC .
