Pearl Mackie (born May 29, 1987 in Brixton , London , England ) is a British actress . She became known to a wider audience on April 23, 2016, when she was introduced as the new companion of the Doctor from the British television series Doctor Who .

Life

Pearl Mackie was born and raised in Brixton, south London. Mackie attended the University of Bristol and graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theater School in 2010 . She works as an acting tutor for children at the Troupers Drama School. Mackie speaks English, French and Spanish. In addition to her acting work, she sings and dances.

Career

Mackie is currently starring in the British Royal National Theater in the production of Supergute Tage or The Odd World of Christopher Boone . In addition, she had many other theater appearances. She has appeared as the computer genius Mia in Crystal Springs at the Park Theater and as Cece and Caits in Obama-ology at the Finborough Theater in London. She had her first engagements in the film and television industry in 2013 with the film Svengali - Life, Love and Music , in which she was seen in a supporting role alongside Martin Freeman , Johnny Owen and Vicky McClure . She made her television debut in 2014 in an episode of the BBC series Doctors . She also played in a music video for the band Years & Years - alongside Ben Whishaw and Tuppence Middleton .

On April 23, 2016 Mackie was a total of 41 companion of the doctor announced. She replaced Jenna Coleman as the companion of the 12th doctor . She had her first appearance as "Bill" in the tenth season, which will be broadcast from April 15, 2017.
