Pedernales is the headquarters of the district ( Municipio ) Pedernales, in the state of Delta Amacuro , Venezuela . The village is located on the Pedernales Canal, part of the Orinoco Delta, not far from the Atlantic Ocean.

history

Pedernales was founded in 1858. It was the capital of Delta Amacuro State from 1884 to 1888 when it was replaced by Tucupita .

The Standard Oil Company began producing oil in the region for the first time in 1931. Foreign companies produced the oil until 1964. Since the region's oil contains a lot of sulfur, production was then abandoned. The Venezuelan oil company PDVSA began to investigate the region for oil production again in 1980.

Pedernales is located on one of the many islands in the Orinoco Delta and is not accessible by car. The village has a port and a small airport. Crude oil is produced in the area. The population lives from oil production and fishing.
