Pedro Ramos de Almeida

Pedro Ramos de Almeida (born March 23, 1932 in Lisbon ; † July 22, 2012 ibid) was a Portuguese writer , mostly political non-fiction , and a communist politician .

Life

Almeida was born in Lisbon in 1932 and studied law . At the age of 18 he joined the youth organization of the MUD (Movimento de União Democrática). Since then he has been politically active. His commitment against the fascist dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar earned him four years in prison in the notorious fortress of Peniche . He was the student leader of the three major universities in the country ( Lisbon , Porto and Coimbra ) and thus always under the surveillance of the secret police PIDE .

He also lived many times abroad, first in Paris from 1961 to 1962 , then from 1962 to 1964 as the official representative of the Partido Comunista Português (PCP) in Prague , and from 1964 to 1969 in Algeria . There he was one of the leaders and initiators of the opposition radio station "Voz da Liberdade" (Voice of Freedom). From 1969 to 1971 he lived underground in Portugal.

He was best known as an author for political books on the subject of colonialism and fascism . He has also written many articles in Portuguese newspapers and magazines. He was a member of the PCP until his death. Almeida was married and has two sons who work as journalists for newspapers.
