Pedro Schwartz Girón (born January 30, 1935 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician , legal scholar and economist .

Life

He is the son of the diplomat Juan Schwartz Díaz-Flores and María del Carmen Girón y Caminos and brother of the diplomat Fernando Schwartz . The family lived in different countries for a long time. He spent his childhood in Vienna , but studied in Madrid, where he graduated from the Universidad Complutense in 1957 with a law degree. He is married and has three children.

education

After he was banned from the diplomatic service due to his political activities, he received a doctorate in law from the University of Madrid (1966). At the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) he wrote another doctoral thesis in political science on John Stuart Mill (1965). In London he came into contact and collaborated with economists such as Lionel Robbins and the philosopher Karl Popper , who became a mentor for Schwartz. He graduated from the LSE in 1972 with a master's degree in economics.

Professional background

On his return to Spain, he worked in the research department of Banco Urquijo before receiving a place in the research department of the Bank of Spain (1967). Schwartz received a chair in "History of Economic Theories" at the University of Madrid. From 1970 to 1992 he taught there as a professor, moved to the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1992 (1992–2003) and has been a professor at the University of San Pablo-CEU in Madrid since 2003.

He has published numerous specialist articles. His PhD students include economists such as Francisco Rodríguez Cabrillo, Carlos Rodríguez Braun, and Jesús Huerta de Soto . In September 1990, Queen Elizabeth II made him "Honorary Officer of the British Empire". In 2003 he was inducted into the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. In 2010 he received the King Juan Carlos Prize for Economics .

Political work

Schwartz took part in the student protests in February 1956 after coming into contact with liberal views. Because of his participation in the protests, he was charged with forming an illegal association and insulting officials. Schwartz is considered a neoliberal activist and a consistent advocate of economic liberalism . He is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society . He founded and directed the Unión Liberal . Its core political theses include an emphasis on strong liberal lobbying and the spread of liberal ideas.
