Peene Canal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Peene Canal is an artificially created waterway in the course of the Ostpeene, a source river of the Peene , between the city of Malchin and the lower reaches of the Westpeene , the other source river of the Peene, in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . To distinguish it from the Neukalen Peene Canal, it is also known as the Malchiner Peene Canal .

The expansion of the Ostpeene from Malchin into a canal and the expansion of the subsequent lower course of the Westpeene, also Kiekpeene , to the Kummerower See was started in 1854 and completed in 1861, as the natural course in this section that had existed until then was not suitable for inland navigation . In the years that followed, the canal was mainly used by the then sugar factory in Dahmen and the sugar factory founded in Malchin in 1882 for the transport of goods. While it was of practically no importance for the industrial transport of goods between 1945 and 1990, its use increased again with the completion of the Malchiner industrial port in 2003.

At the beginning of the Peene Canal in Malchiner Hafen, the official kilometers of the Peene as a waterway begin with km 0.0. The Peene Canal has a length of 2.5 kilometers and runs almost in a straight line through the Malchiner meadows in a north-northeast direction. The subsequent West Peene runs in a north-easterly direction and flows into the Kummerower See after 2.1 km . The Peene federal waterway begins at the confluence of the Peene Canal with the West Peene (km 2.5) .

In the north of Malchin, the Dahmer Canal, coming from Malchiner See , flows into the Peene Canal, which, in addition to industrial use and passenger shipping, is also important for water hiking , as it, together with the Dahmer Canal, enables a canoe crossing from Kummerower See to Malchiner See . At its beginning in Malchin there is a water hiking rest area .
