The Pegasus class is a series of container ships owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company . It consists of twelve ships, which were delivered between May 2016 and March 2017. They are among the largest container ships in the world.
history
The series has been built by the South Korean shipyards Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Samsung Heavy Industries since 2015 . The ships were commissioned in 2014 by the Chinese companies Bank of Communications Leasing (BoCom), Minsheng Financial Leasing (Daewoo) and Quantum Pacific (Samsung). The operator of the series is the Geneva- based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The ships are to be used in liner services between Europe and East Asia.
The first ship was christened MSC Jade on February 12, 2016 . With 19,437 TEU it replaced the units of the Olympic series with 19,224 TEU with the title of the container ships with the highest nominal number of container spaces .
technology
The ships classified by DNV GL belong to the group of ULCS container ships. They have comparable dimensions to the units of the Olympic series with a slightly larger number of container spaces and a slightly higher load capacity.
The deckhouse is arranged further forward than in the majority of conventional container ships, which enables an improved line of sight and thus a higher forward deck loading. The bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure; they meet the relevant MARPOL regulations. The holds of the ships are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The maximum container capacity is nominally 19,437 TEU .
If the storage space is fully utilized, an average container weight of around 10.2 tons could be transported; With the average container weight of 14 tons, which is usually assumed for comparison purposes, the capacity is reduced to around 14,000 units. There are also 1,800 connections for integral refrigerated containers .
The ships are propelled by a two - stroke diesel engine of the type B&W 11G95ME-C9.5, which acts on a single fixed propeller .
