Pelargonium aestivale belonging to the genus Pelargonium within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae).
description
Vegetative characteristics
The species grows as a geophyte and reaches heights of 12 to 20 centimeters. The simple or tripartite leaves are prostrate. The blade is rolled back and the leaf margin is completely cut to sawed.
Generative characteristics
The inflorescence is branched into 2 to 4 partial inflorescences . These each bear 3 to 8, sometimes up to 11, cream-colored to yellow individual flowers. The flower cup is very long. A sheath is formed by the nailed petals . The top two of the five petals are drawn out in a nail and spatulate and have a wine-red, feather-like marking. The three lower ones are spatulate. There are five short and fertile stamens . The pollen is colored orange. The scar is wine red.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
Occurrence
Pelargonium aestivale comes from the South African provinces of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape .
Taxonomy
The species was first described in 1995 by Elizabeth M. Marais .
According to Marais, this species forms a morphological group together with Pelargonium aristatum , Pelargonium fissifolium and Pelargonium petroselinifolium .
It belongs to the Hoarea (Sweet) DC section. It is rated “Least Concern” in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa.
