Pelargonium appendiculatum belonging to the genus Pelargonium within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae). The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1781 as Geranium appendiculatum .
description
Vegetative characteristics
The species grows as a geophyte with branched root tubers and numerous vegetation points and is up to 30 centimeters high. Older plants form groups up to 50 centimeters in diameter. The greyish green and stalked leaves are irregularly 2 to 3-fold pinnate, deeply incised and densely shaggy-hairy with glandular hairs. The blade is elliptical to egg-shaped in outline. The large, very showy and rhombic or ear-shaped stipules are stiff, spread out and fused with the petioles over two thirds of their length.
Generative characteristics
The inflorescence is branched into 1 to 3 partial inflorescences . These each bear 8 to 15 individual flowers. The flower cup is long. The top two of the five pale yellow petals are spatulate and have a small pale pink or dark red spot in the center. The three lower ones are tongue-shaped. There are five fertile stamens of different lengths . The pollen is colored orange.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
Occurrence
Pelargonium appendiculatum comes from the Western Cape province of South Africa .
Taxonomy
It was first described as Geranium appendiculatum in 1781 by Carl von Linnaeus the Younger . Carl Ludwig Willdenow put the species in 1800 in the genus Pelargonium . Synonyms are Hoarea appendiculata (L. f.) Ecklon & Zeyher (1835) and Geraniospermum appendiculatum (L. f.) Kuntze (1891).
It belongs to the Ligularia Harv section . It is rated in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa as "Endangered" = "threatened with extinction".
