Moniliforme Pelargonium belongs to the genus Pelargonium within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae).
features
The species grows as a geophyte and has a height of up to 40 centimeters at the time of flowering. The simple or tripartite leaves have a stalk and a broadly ovate to rhombic leaf blade . There are long glandular hairs on the top of the leaves, and the main veins are hairy on the bottom.
12 to 40 individual flowers are formed on the unbranched inflorescence . The flower cup is very long. The five, spatulate petals are cream to yellow in color. The two upper petals each have a wine-red spot in the middle, this is only occasionally formed on the three lower petals. There are five straight and fertile stamens protruding from the flower. The anthers are burgundy and the pollen is orange. The scar is dark pink.
Occurrence
Pelargonium moniliforme comes from the South African provinces of the North Cape and Western Cape .
Taxonomy
The first description was in 1860 by William Henry Harvey .
A synonym for the species is Geraniospermum moniliforme (Harv.) Kuntze (1891). A closely related species is Pelargonium vinaceum .
The species belongs to the section Hoarea (Sweet) DC. It is rated “Least Concern” in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa.
