Pelargonium oblongatum belonging to the genus Pelargonium within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae).
features
The species grows as a geophyte with an elongated or turnip tuber and reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters. The bright green leaves are petiolate. The blade is simple and ovoid or circular in shape. On the upper side, the leaf is covered with long and short glandular hairs. On the underside of the leaf, short, soft and spreading hairs are densely arranged and there are also glandular hairs. The leaf margin is serrated and ciliate.
The inflorescence is branched and each partial inflorescence bears 4 to 8, sometimes up to 24, single flowers. The flower cup is long and densely covered with hair. Of the five quite large, pale yellow or cream-colored petals , the top two are pulled out in a nail and above are egg-shaped with a wine-red feather-like mark. The lower three petals are broad and spatulate. There are five fertile stamens of different lengths, inclined upwards, protruding from the flower. The pollen is colored orange.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
Occurrence
Pelargonium oblongatum comes from the North Cape province of South Africa .
Taxonomy
The first description was in 1860 by William Henry Harvey .
A synonym for the species is Geraniospermum oblongatum (Harv.) Kuntze (1891).
The species belongs to the section Hoarea (Sweet) DC. It is rated “Least Concern” in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa.
