The Pelizaeus grammar school is the largest of six grammar schools in the city of Paderborn with around 1500 students . It bears the name of its founder Johanna Pelizaeus , who in 1859, as a young teacher with the support of church circles in Paderborn, set up a private Catholic "secondary school for girls" with boarding school . For girls over the age of 14, the Pelizaeus Gymnasium was the first Catholic secondary educational institution in Paderborn. Shortly before, a Protestant secondary school for girls had been established.

From small beginnings, the school developed into a viable institution, which was owned solely by the founder as a private school for almost 50 years and then - until its nationalization in 1929 - was run by a private sponsoring company. At times the school had its own seminar for teachers, a "women's school" and the "technical courses" department for teacher training in housekeeping, manual labor and gymnastics.

Until 1974, the main branch of the Pelizaeus Gymnasium was a "State New Language Girls Gymnasium". There was also a " women's high school " (with a focus on housekeeping, from 1930 to 1974) and a "pedagogical-musical" branch (from 1965 to 1974). Since 1974 the school has been run as the Paderborn grammar school for boys and girls. Although the school continues to be attended by more girls than boys, the number of male students is also increasing. The headmaster has been Peter Lütke Westhues since 2012, after he was the deputy of the former headmaster, Antonius Steins. His deputy is Mr. Adami. 36 classes are currently with about 990 students in the lower secondary level and 495 students attend the upper secondary level.

history

From the founding of the school in 1859 to 1908 - the early years

On October 7, 1859 , the advertisement for the opening of the Catholic secondary school for girls appeared in the " Westfälische Volksblatt " . Another four were added in the course of the year. The restriction of registration to girls over 14 years of age was something new for the Paderborn residents and makes this number a little more understandable. In addition, the subjects (religious studies, world history, geography, German language, French language, English language, natural science, arithmetic, calligraphy , drawing and handicraft; taken from the above newspaper article) showed a high standard.

About the term daughter school
the daughter school has characteristics of a class school , which could only or more likely be made accessible to the higher class (also because of the school fees); In this special case, however, the daughter's school is also characterized by the familiar atmosphere that arose from the fact that teachers and students lived under one roof in the first few years.

In the first few years, Johanna gave most of the lessons herself. She received spiritual support in the subjects of religious studies and arithmetic, and a French woman resident in Paderborn could be found for the French lessons.

After the increase in the number of female students in the summer semester of 1860, the school had to move to a new location in April 1861. The residential building at Stadelhof No. 2 was to be a school building for 47 years - i.e. until 1908. The lowering of the admission age from 14 to 12 brought more students to the school in 1869. In 1877, the age limit was lifted completely and a grand piano was added in the garden of the building to save space. The school now comprised 10 years (1st to 10th grade) with girls between the ages of 6 and 16 and from now on competed with all Paderborn schools.

School life

Partner schools

School partnerships exist with the Lycée Bellevue in Le Mans ( France ), the Baczynski Liceum (which was closed) in Krakow ( Poland ), a large high school in Pskow ( Russia ), the school for the blind in Paderborn and, since 1997, two schools in Ghana , which be financially supported. There are regular student exchanges with the partner schools in France, Poland and Russia.

Reference library

In the new construction of the C-building, the idea of a reference library was implemented, which is available to the students for research during class but also as a lounge during free periods. The reference library is managed independently by the students of the school as part of a working group .

Gym

The Pelizaeus High School has a triple sports hall with a gym on the upper floor. The sports hall also has a grandstand with space for around 300 spectators. The old gym, which was rented to the Reismann-Gymnasium, was demolished in 2010 in order to build a cafeteria for the Pelizaeus-Gymnasium.

Extra-curricular engagement

At the Pelizaeus-Gymnasium there are numerous forms of extracurricular involvement, for example in working groups, sports groups, the student council or with the school newspaper. Once a year, particularly committed schoolchildren are honored with the so-called "Pelizaeus Prize" for their voluntary work.

Alumni network

In June 2003, "Petzwerk - Pelizaeus former network eV" was founded, a network of former students of the Pelizaeus grammar school. In addition to maintaining old school contacts, the alumni network pursues the goal of being the contact person for students from the upper school when choosing a course and career.

On Petzwerk information evenings at the Pelizaeus-Gymnasium, the students have the opportunity to have direct discussions with the alumni present and benefit from their experience in training, studies or professional life.

On March 27, 2009, an information event took place for the first time in combination with a vocational market organized by the school during class time.

Fire on August 29, 2016

On August 29, there was a fire in the left part of the B building during the lunch break, which was triggered by roofing work. The school was then evacuated. The classes 8 and 9 housed there now moved to the former Busdorf secondary school. The building needs a complete renovation.
