Peltigera leucophlebia is a leaf lichen from the shield lichen family(Peltigeraceae). The specific epithet is composed of the two Greek words λευκός (leukós = bright) and φλέψ (phléps = vein) and refers to the conspicuous veining on the underside.

description

The lobes of the camp are between two and four centimeters in size and are moist of a pure green color, dry light gray. The algae layer consists of green algae of the genus Coccomyxa . Noticeable in the lobes are dark, 0.2–1.0 mm wide nests, so-called cephalodia , which contain cyanobacteria of the genus Nostoc . The light underside of the camp has a clear network of dark veins and black rhizines . Apothecia are quite rare. They are red-brown, saddle-shaped and appear on short extensions of the lobe edges.

Location and occurrence

The lichen grows mainly in the montane zone up to the tree line in shady (moist) locations between mosses or on rocks (both on carbonate and on silicate rock ). It is a lichen of the arctic and temperate zones and occurs in Europe as well as in North America and Asia.

Systematics

Peltigera leucophlebia was originally regarded as a variety of the similar lichen Peltigera aphthosa , which differs through a uniformly felt, dark underside. It was not until 1926 that the Hungarian botanist Gyelnik established Peltigera leucophlebia as a separate species. Due to their apple-green color when wet, both lichens were called "apple lichen" (and later placed by Gyelnik in their own genus Chloropeltigera ).

use

The lobes of both lichens were previously used as laxatives and worming agents under the name Herba musci cumatilis .
