Penelope ( ancient Greek Πηνελοπεῖα ) is a female given name, derived from the name of the wife of Odysseus in Greek mythology . The name is said to be composed of the Greek words πήνη ( pēnē = tissue ) and λέπειν ( lépein = tear off, peel off ). Penny is short for Penelope.
