Penelope Thorn

Penelope Thorn (* 1957 ) is an English opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

After studying in the 1970s at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the London Opera Center as well as with Benjamin Britten , Peter Pears and also with Tito Gobbi in Italy, she entered an engagement at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe .

After winning first prize at the Tito Gobbi Competition and the Roncoroni Prize at the Concorso Voci Verdiane in Busseto , she began her freelance career, which brought her to numerous opera houses around the world, primarily with roles in the youthful-dramatic repertoire . They often combined guest contracts with the Lower Saxony State Opera in Hanover and the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken .

Under the direction of the composer Gian Carlo Menotti , she took on the title role in the German premiere of his opera Maria Golovin .

Further guest appearances have brought her to the opera stages of Zurich , Munich , Rome , Nice , Stuttgart , Berlin , Prague and Mannheim, among others .

She worked with conductors such as Wolfgang Sawallisch , Alberto Erede , Jun Märkl , Ralf Weikert , Christian Thielemann , Richard Hickox .

After taking a break due to a change of subject, she now devotes herself to the highly dramatic roles, primarily in Richard Wagner's work .

She is also a vocal teacher a. a. at the University of Koblenz-Landau , Campus Landau .
