Tito Gobbi
Tito Gobbi (born October 24, 1913 in Bassano del Grappa , † March 5, 1984 in Rome ) was an Italian opera singer ( baritone ).
Life
Tito was born in Bassano del Grappa and studied law at the University of Padua before taking a vocal training course. He made his operatic debut in 1935 as Conte Rodolfo in Vincenzo Bellini's La sonnambula . In 1942 he appeared for the first time at La Scala in Milan and in 1951 at Covent Garden in London as Belcore in Gaëtano Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore . Tito Gobbi was considered a congenial opponent of Maria Callas as "Scarpia" in Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca .
He was considered an excellent bel canto singer with a talent for verism ( naturalistic representation in opera). With his wife Tilda he had a daughter named Cecile.
