Dame Penelope Lively , DBE (born Penelope Margaret Low in Cairo March 17, 1933 ) is a British writer . She has been writing novels and children's books since 1970 and received the Booker Prize in 1987 for her novel Moon Tiger .

Life

Penelope Low's parents divorced early and she was raised by her father during World War II in Egypt, where she received private tuition until he sent her to boarding school in England in 1946. Then studied history at St. Anne's College of Oxford University . In 1957 she married Jack Lively, who would later become a political professor at Warwick University , with whom she has two children. Jack Lively died in 1998.

In 1970 she published her first children's book, in 1977 her first novel, The Road to Lichfield . Since then she has published nearly 30 children's books, 14 novels, a number of short stories, and autobiographies. She also wrote texts for film and television and worked as a radio presenter.

Penelope Lively was in 1989 and 2001 Officer Commander of the Order of the British Empire , in 2012 it was as part of the 2012 New Year Honors for Dame Commander appointed (DBE). She holds honorary doctorates from Tufts, Massachusetts and Warwick Universities and lives in London.

Penelope Lively's central theme in almost all of her books is how contemporary culture and society deal with history , the many facets and the consequences of different historical perspectives, for example in her most important novel Moon Tiger , in which she describes a love story in World War II from different perspectives tells.
