PENICILLIN is a Japanese band that can be classified as J-Rock . Their beginnings were also in visual kei and penicillin quickly became one of the biggest bands in this category, but abandoned their visual kei image after 1997.

PENICILLIN was founded in 1992 by four friends from Tōkai University and consisted of singer Gisho, guitarist Chisato and drummer O-Jiro. When Hakuei joined them, he took over the position of singer and Gisho then played the electric bass. The second guitarist Shaisuke only stayed in the founding year and left the band to later join the band Baiser . The band then stayed with the four members until 2007.

Penicillin's first concert took place that year. Their first mini album Penicillin Shock was released in 1994 and produced by Kiyoshi (ex- Media Youth , ex- Spread Beaver , support band of hide ). Missing Link followed a few months, followed by two more mini albums in 1995.

Because of their success, Penicillin decided in 1996 to sign a major contract with Eastwest Japan , where their major debut Vibe was released in June 1996 . The album Indwell was followed by a break that was to be used for solo projects.

The musicians came back from the break in 1997 changed, the visual-kei-like appearance stayed away, the music became more poppy on the following albums Limelight and Ultimate Velocity .

In 1998, Penicillin decided to expand their artistic output: First Hakuei demonstrated his skills in the film 30 ~ Thirty , then the band produced an opera based on Shakespeare's Hamlet . While Kiyoshi from Spread Beaver composed the music, Chisato took on the role of Horatio and Gisho the role of Laertis. O-Jiro's role was dubbed a rabbit.

The first best of album of the band was released in 1999, titled This is Penicillin 1994 to 1999 , it was followed by the single Nice in Lip + L . In 2000 the band released the more experimental Union Jap . The single-release Ultrider was used as the ending theme for the anime TV series Kindaichi Shounen .

Back to the roots

In 2001 penicillin gave up major status and released the singles Inazuma and Limit Complex c / w Juliet , which were rockier again. The album Nuclear Banana , which was released in November of that year, was not commercially able to follow up on earlier times, but it did not sell too badly either.

In addition to following up on her solo projects, Penicillin released FLOWER CIRCUS (2004), hell bound heart (2005) and two singles in 2006.

The year 2007 marked the band's 15th anniversary, which was celebrated with the single Grind Candy and a special live on Valentine's Day in Shibuya O-East . At the end of February of the same year a new album called Blue Heaven was released , which was followed by a tour.

On May 20th, after the last concert of the tour, bassist Gisho left the band.

Members

When his parents divorced, he and his mother moved to Hirosaki , Aomori Prefecture . He graduated from Tokai University. In 1996 he made his solo debut with the single Zeus . In 1997 he played the lead role in the film 30 ~ Thirty and in 1998 Hamlet in the rock opera Hamlet, which was written by Kiyoshi. Since 1999 he has been a member of the band Machine together with Kiyoshi. Hakuei is currently modeling for the Black Peace Now label and painting manga strips for the music magazine Fool's Mate , the Susume! To be called Tonosama . He is also a member of the secret band Kaizoku , which only plays secret lives . When penicillin play a live on his birthday it's called the Super Heart Core .
Chisato also studied at Tokai University. He made his solo debut in 1996 with Dance with the wild things . In the course of his solo career, he has made it to prestigious concert halls such as the Budokan . In the 1990s he wrote music for the band Aucifer . At the moment he is solo as MSTR with the band Crack6 and also plays as Chisato as support guitarist for Acid Black Cherry . When penicillin play a live on his birthday it's called Rock x Rock .
O-Jiro also studied at Tokai University, but did not graduate. His birthday gig is called Tono! Gig .
Gisho graduated from Tokai University with a degree in business. For his solo career he uses the name Jun Otaki. He starred in the film Shonan Bakuzo Zuku Arakure Knight . In 2001 he joined Omega Project Holdings and was elected to the company's board of directors. Since he's a fan of Keanu Reeves , his birthday lives are called the Gishorix Revolution .
